Dear Carnegie Vanguard High School Alum – We need your help today. You know best what Carnegie has meant in your life and those of your friends.

WE ARE GETTING OUR OWN NEW BUILDING! Groundbreaking occurred in June and we are on schedule to occupy it in August, in time for our 2012-13 school year.

A lovely slideshow detailing the plan for the new campus may be found here: http://aiahouston.org/docs/CarnegieHSPresentation2020.pdf . The new census will be 600 students.

Our architect and our HISD representative on the project have indicated two main areas where our funding shortfall likely will arise on the campus - creating a total of $350,000 needed.

At present we expect to need to provide funds to purchase theater-grade lights and sound and, possibly, a few other fixtures/amenities for the theater/performing/preparation/classroom areas. The total funding need for the Arts center will be around $150,000 .

There also is a list of slightly over $200,000 in athletic equipment, field/court finishing, etc. which also likely will fall outside of HISD funding. (Schools with a census of less than 1200 are not eligible for certain items within HISD building budgets.)

We expect to have finalized lists of funding needs (others may arise) within the next month, as current bidding processes for Settegast/Arts , the parking garage, and athletic items conclude this month. The total estimated shortfall has held steady since June. Construction is on schedule.

Some details:
Part of the new campus involves the preservation of a 1930’s art deco building.
With the creation of an Arts Center in the refurbished Settegast Building http://www.houstondeco.org/1930s/settegast.html , we will have a lobby/walkway with display windows for awards, playbills, art, etc.; two classrooms, one for art and one for theater/music/rehearsal; a 120 seat theater; and a small room for storage that also will have space and wiring for a kiln.

The reason for the funding needs on a public school project are outlined in the FAQ document on the New Carnegie Vanguard Building Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/226213143501/ .

Our fundraising status is as follows:
The PTO has donated $100,000 from a fund that was created over recent years for just such this situation. The PTO, a 501(c)(3) organization, is the recipient of any donations and has an agreement with HISD to apply funds as PTO deems fit as outlined in the FAQ..
We have set a deadline to acquire all needed funds by the end of February, as some construction items may require attention while crews are on the property. We are in the midst of an end-of-(tax)-year push for the annual GATE Campaign and have been given two challenge grants of $5,000 each should we reach $50,000 in new donations prior to the beginning of 2012. We are seeking and will continue to welcome financial support from within the Carnegie community through the GATE Campaign button at www.vanguardian.org .
We have generated and are following a number of leads to individuals and foundations.
We plan to develop a similar set of leads in the athletics/team sports community to pursue after the first of the year.
We hope to have some funds generated at the annual Auction, although the first $30,000 will be set aside for next year’s PTO budget.

Monetary donations are fungible. Funds raised without designation can be applied to any need that arises.

Naming opportunities and sponsorships for academic areas exist and are open for discussion. (There also is an unfunded Amphitheater behind the Arts Center that we could develop during this construction phase, but could require as much as $300,000 additional.)

That is an overview of our situation. If you have questions, ideas for sources of funds (individuals, foundations, corporations, etc.) you can get back to me or communicate directly with our Building Fundraising Chair – Jeff Basen-Engquist (father of a Junior at CVHS) at jfbe@comcast.net or (H) 713.726.8126 .

TWO ACTION ITEMS:
First, consider clicking on the GATE Campaign button at www.vanguardian.org and making a donation. Consider making an additional donation in January when the new tax year commences. All contributions are tax deductible and greatly appreciated.

Second, move this message along by posting it on your Facebook and other social media pages and send it as an individual message to other graduates, family, and friends. You are our best hope to reach deep into our Carnegie community.

Thank you for your support. Happy Holidays to you and yours

HISD offers Online Credit-Recovery in which some CVHS students will use computer software in a special “Grad Lab” designed to help them pass courses that they’ve failed but need to graduate. Additional information can be found at www.houstonisd.org.

Grad Lab requires a significant amount of seat time. Along with class time provided during the school day, the student will also need access to a compatible computer outside of regular school hours.

Whole course credit is an alternative for students who have failed a course with grades between 60 and 69. It is highly recommended that students who fail fall courses with grades between 65 and 69 remain in the teacher-led spring class for whole course credit.
